Almost perfect timing PDF Print E-mail

These last three days have really been a challenge planting vegetables and we have one more to go before we go back to our real jobs.

I took a vacation day from the newspaper on Thursday just so I could get some serious work done on the farm. And I did, and the timing of it was almost perfect too.

I spent Thursday and Friday planting as much as I could except the melons, cukes and pumpkins which will be planted next weekend. I got everything in except for two varieties of beans and some snap peas.

I think I did pretty well considering we're seeding 2.4 acres this year and I've had to aggressively till so keep the quackgrass down.

Oh, about the perfect timing..... It started raining on Friday night, just light rain, but about noon on Saturday, the sky opened up and I was actually cutting trees at the time and I got drenched. I got so wet, I had to go back to the house and have Ilene get me some dry clothes.

I didn't complain. It was a warm, heavy rain that western North Dakota needed badly. Besides, it didn't make any difference in cutting trees so after the heavy rain passed, I was back at the greenhouse site, slicing up those huge trees we dropped several weeks ago.

Tomorrow, we plant sweet potatoes regardless of weather. They have to get planted. And next week it will be the finale of cuke and melon seeds and tomatoes, peppers and okra plants. Then, we'll wait for nature to do the rest.
