Thank you, Finny! PDF Print E-mail

After another long day of working on the greenhouse, the structure is beginning to look like a greenhouse.

Finny and I spent Sunday working on the wall of water that has been such a challenge for the both of us. At one point he asked me, how many hours have you got into this wall? I coudn't give him an honest answer.

Finny has built greenhouses in Michigan, including a passive solar greenhouse like the one we have at North Star Farms but it had slight variations.

He's been a great help for two reasons: first, because he is an expert on greenhouse construction. I'm kind of a dummy when it comes to carpentry, math, physics and that sort of thing. But Finny just knows this stuff and I've become his sidekick.

The other thing is, he's been another person working on the farm, and even one extra person has been incredibly valuable to continue progress on this structure that started sometime last October.

We still have a way to go but should have it about wrapped up the first weekend in May. It's a little late to get new seedlings in there, but we'll certainly be ready to go for a fall and winter crop because we believe the passive solar design will heat the greenhouse at least until Dec. 15.

We'll see, but regardless, it is an adventure. Speaking of adventure, we just got approved for a high tunnel grant so we'll be building more of these things.

But, it's like Finny said, you'll be an expert after this first one.
