Happy Planting PDF Print E-mail

I'm writing this blog short of midnight but I'm going to consider it Sunday because I'm so tired I won't be able to stay awake until midnight.

We finally have spring and I will be spending the entire day planting onions and leeks. The soil looks much better than it did a year ago when there was no moisture. We'll have several thousand onions and leeks to put down so it will be a long day.

I want to try to get some peas planted also. My target date to plant the first peas is April 9 and here it is May 3, and I may not get them in because of all the onion plants. It's been that kind of a winter.

Winter hit the garlic too, but I don't think we lost much of it. Last year I notice garlice emerging for the first time on March 19 and here it is May 3, and about one-third of it is up and most of the rest is growing but it seems to be moving rather slowly. But as I told Ilene, I planted it 4 inches deep and put a foot of mulch on it.

May is going to be a busy month. There's a lot of planting to do and some new machinery to try out. I'm actually direct-seeding some onions for the first time with a new seeder I picked up last winter. Most of them are plants, but because I grossly miscalculated how much seed I would need, I'm going to direct seed a row of each variety just to see what happens.

Happy planting!
