This has been an incredible winter, but these past couple of days have proven that spring will come eventually.
Friday was a beautiful day, and snow was melting all over the place. Unfortunately, now we have ice. The temperature reached 40 Fahrenheit and wind was light, so it was a nice day and a lot of the snow depth was cut down but we still have 2 or more feet of snow on the ground.
I noticed the greenhouse door was off center and I discovered some melted snow had turned to ice under the door and actually pushed it up. I chopped all that away and took the pressure away from the door. But when I finished I stepped into the greenhouse and it was 63 degrees in there so the sun is once again getting the power we want it to have.
It's a little early to start plants, but I'm thinking that by the end of this month, I could have several varieties started. Last year, my initial plant date was Feb. 23, but I didn't have the greenhouse built until about mid February so didn't know that sunlight on the end of January could actually sustain growth.
We will still get below zero cold for most of February so heating the greenhouse at night would be a waste of money to keep it going. In just a month, however, the overnight temperatures will moderate and it won't be cost prohibitive to get seeds started.
March in North Dakota is an interesting month and one I look forward to seeing. We can get ugly weather, but typically March brings us very nice spring days and melts a lot of snow that we are thankful to have this year and can really get us a head start for the growing season.
Right now, it's a waiting game until the temperature warms a little. Spring is around the corner, though. We could sure feel it in Friday and yesterday.
