It's about 24 hours early, but March is going out like a lion. This saying seems to apply every year no matter what. Heavy snow warnings were issued yesterday afternoon and although we didn't get the heavy snow, we received a couple of inches on top a steady drizzle most of the afternoon. But it wasn't the snow, it was the wind. While it was raining, the wind was light and the drizzle was coming down, mixed with an occasional snowflake. But about 10 o'clock Saturday night, the wind hit like troops storming Normandy Beach. It was ugly for most of the night. Unfortunately, we didn't get a lot of snow and we desperatly need it. We prefer moisture be in liquid form, but since it is the spring of the year and incredibly dry, we'll take it any way we can get it. In fact, I'll be going outside later this morning with a shovel and gathering up as much snow as I can get in the backyard and driveway so we can use it to water plants in the greenhouse. Had we not received the moisture yesterday, I would have run out of water in the greenhouse tonight (Sunday). It's interesting too that in the greenhouse, the plants dry out incredibly quickly and it's because there is so little humidity, the water just evaporates instead of soaking into the soil and mulch. Ilene keeps saying that April and May are going to bring a lot of rain. Typically, that does happen here. In fact, three years ago, we received half our annual precipitation in the first week in June. Since water is becoming such a precious resource, even here with the Des Lacs River being fed by streams in Saskatchewan, I'm going to have to step up my effort to capture as much of that rain water as I can.
