Former North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson poses with Ilene and Marv Baker during a trip to visit North Star Farms and the farmers' market in Carpio.
Ag Classroom
We are committed to education as we continue growing organic produce and expanding our farm. We intend to share what we learn through this Web site, on-farm visits, consulting and public speaking to provide a better understanding of organic production to consumers, growers and marketers. To book Marv and/or Ilene for a speaking engagement, please email Marv at ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or Ilene at ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). We will provide details and a full list of credentials.

Public Speaking and Consulting
Marv and Ilene are available on a number of topics relating to small-scale vegetable farming. They include; 1.) organic garlic production, 2.) passive solar greenhouse, 3.) working with media, 4.) building a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), 6.) starting a farmers' market from scratch, 7.) educating supermarket staff, restaurateurs and food vendors about locally grown and organic, 8.) chemicals in agriculture.

Agri-Tourism
When we began North Star Farms in 2004, we decided that education of locally grown and organic was as important as marketing the produce itself. To enhance that philosophy, we invite you to an on-farm experience, individually or tours and especially our shareholders, to take a first-hand look at what we grow organically, why we grow it and why it is better for your body and the environment. Drop by for a tour and we'll have some snacks right out of the field.

'You Can't Grow That in North Dakota'
Because there's such a naive perception of what won't grow in North Dakota, we are always quick to showcase our unusual crops and prove that we can grow a lot more than the general public realizes. Not only will we point out our "impossible" crops like peanuts and okra, we will tell you how and why they can thrive in the Des Lacs River Valley. Our marshmallow crop in 2009 gained national media attention. We tried strawberry spinach in 2010 and have been growing Cascade organic hops since 2012. This year we will be growing red foliated organic cotton and a Civil War-era peanut called Carwile.
